Philology Institute of JaSU (Jalal-Abad State University)

Based on the Rector's Order No. 163/1 dated May 14, 1993, and the decision of the Academic Council of JaSU, one of the first faculties within the structure of JaSU—the Engineering and Pedagogical Faculty—was established on the basis of the A.S. Pushkin Jalal-Abad Pedagogical College, which was well-known in the Union Republics. The Dean of the Faculty was appointed E. Umetov, Candidate of Physical and Mathematical Sciences (Ph.D. equivalent), Associate Professor, and a scholar who made a great contribution to the formation and development of the university.

Based on Order No. 179, Protocol No. 6, dated May 12, 2000, and the decision of the Academic Council and Rector of JaSU, the Foreign Languages Faculty was established as an independent faculty.

Based on Order No. 179, Protocol No. 6, dated May 12, 2000, and the decision of the Academic Council and Rector of JaSU, the Kyrgyz Philology and Culture Faculty was established.

Due to structural changes, the Foreign Languages Faculty was renamed the Faculty of International Relations and World Languages (Decision of the JaSU Academic Council, Protocol No. 9 of 14.06.2009; Order No. 263 of 28.07.2009).

In 2011, the Kyrgyz Philology and Culture Faculty was renamed the Faculty of Kyrgyz Philology and Journalism by the decision of the JaSU Academic Council.

Based on the decision of the Academic Council and the Rector of JaSU (Order No. 241) dated October 2, 2005, the Faculty of Philology of CIS Nations was established.

On July 10, 2013, by the decision of the Academic Council of Jalal-Abad State University, the Philology Faculty was established on the basis of the Faculty of Philology of CIS Nations, the Faculty of International Relations and World Languages, and the Faculty of Kyrgyz Philology and Journalism.

Based on Protocol No. 10 of the meeting of the JaSU Academic Council dated June 30, 2025, the following decision was approved: based on structural changes carried out to improve the quality of professional training, develop education and science, and in accordance with the special status of JaSU, the Philology Faculty was transformed into the Philology Institute, which includes the following structural divisions:

  • Department of English Language and Literature
  • Department of Russian Philology
  • Department of Kyrgyz Language and Literature
  • Department of German Language and Inter-Faculty Foreign Language
  • Department of Intercultural Communication and Linguistics
  • College of Foreign Languages (Specialties: English Language and Chinese Language)

Institute Structure

The Institute includes 5 departments and the College of Foreign Languages affiliated with the Institute:

Material and Technical Base

The material and technical base of the Institute consists of 25 classrooms. Among them: 3 – lecture halls with panel boards, 3 – language centers, 2 – computer classes, 17 – auditoriums for practical classes. The Institute has a well-equipped modern material and technical base for implementing the educational process, and an automated system for managing the educational process (AVN) is in operation.

 Wireless internet (WI-FI) is installed in the academic building, and students use the internet facilities free of charge and without limits.

Faculty and Teaching Staff

The faculty and teaching staff comprises 78 instructors, of which 57 are full-time and 21 are part-time (on combined appointments). Of these: Doctors of Science – 4 full-time, Candidates of Science – 18 full-time. Leading scholars, highly qualified teachers, and educators of the Kyrgyz Republic teach at the Institute. Among them are laureates of State Prizes of the Kyrgyz Republic, Honoured Workers of Education and Science Figures of the Kyrgyz Republic, and holders of titles such as "Founder of a Scientific Direction," "Honoured Worker of Science and Technology," "Honoured Worker of Science and Education," "Founder of the School of Comparative Linguoconceptology" of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences, and "Founder of the Direction of the Linguo-Ethnogenetic Unity of Altaic and Sino-Tibetan Languages."

Certain disciplines are taught with the participation of native speakers, specifically volunteer instructors from America, Germany, Turkey, and China.

Students and faculty are given the opportunity to participate in international exchange programs without interrupting the educational process. The Philology Institute works closely with graduates and employers, with whom various events and meetings are held, and feedback is implemented (surveys, discussions). Faculty members annually undergo internships at foreign universities under various programs to enhance their professional competence. The university management pays serious attention to improving the qualifications, retraining, and internships of its employees in foreign and Kyrgyz educational and scientific organizations.

The Institute conducts and supports the Olympiad movement. Every year, students participate in international, regional, and republican Olympiads in philological fields and linguistics, winning prizes.
