The history and goals of the American Corner

A resource center «American corner» was opened in 2003 in March, after signing a memorandum of cooperation between embassy of the USA in Kyrgyzstan and Jalal-Abad State University. Embassy of the USA provides center with all the necessary technical equipment and textbooks. It should be underlined that between 2012 and 2022 the USA’s embassy has been supporting the center by granting over 150000$. One of the main aims of the center is to create environments for students, teachers and the people of the city as well to study and help to learn the English language in the modern conditions. More than 5000 students, schoolchildren and teachers uses technics of the resource center every month.

Resources of the American Corner

From the first day of opening, the American Corner has become a resource center for universities and other schools in Jalal-Abad. This is due to the fact that the resource center has more than 2000 books of various genres, for English language learners there are more than 200 audio-video materials and e-books (kindles). Teachers and students of the university can use free Wi-Fi and there are 25 computers, 24 laptops, 10 tablets and 10 virtual glasses for use. The resource center also regularly hosts seminars, trainings, meetings and online-offline conferences. Currently, online-offline seminars and trainings on methods of teaching English are held for teachers of the Faculty of Philology and Jalal-Abad College.

Nowadays specialists from the USA’s program Fulbright and Peace Corps volunteers set such English learning courses as: Toefl, writing club and talking club. In order to raise students’ literacy in media, entrepreneurship and information technology there are such projects since 2020 as “media literacy”, “entrepreneur’s camp”, “young inventors”, “cyber safety” and “virtual reality”. There are presentations and trainings for students and teachers about the USA’s experience exchanging programs. Thus, annually the USA’s embassy organizes trainings about programs as Global Ugrad for students and for teachers Fullbright Research Fellowship, Fullbright Teaching Assistant Program and Humphrey Fellowship. Apart from the trainings AC sets seminars and online conferences. And for students who wants to study abroad there are TOEFL (audiocassette), GRE, GMAT, LSAT, SAT and IELTS materials to practice English. Also resource center monthly provides with the English learning books and magazine “Forum”.
