Kyrgyzstan is one of the founding states of the SCO.

The organization was founded on June 15, 2001, in Shanghai. It initially included Kyrgyzstan, China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan. Later, India, Pakistan, Iran, and Belarus joined, and the organization expanded. The main goal of the SCO is to strengthen friendly relations between member states, jointly combat terrorism, extremism, and separatism, and develop trade, economic, scientific, technical, and cultural cooperation.
