Komuz Day Celebrated at JASU with Music and Tradition

On September 9, Kyrgyzstan celebrates Komuz Day, honoring the country’s iconic national musical instrument. Marking the occasion, B. Osmonov Jalal-Abad State University (JASU) opened today’s working day with the resonant sounds of the komuz. For two hours, faculty and students performed traditional kyuis and songs without pause, filling the campus with music.

The celebration took place in front of all JASU institutes and colleges, where participants not only enjoyed live performances but also learned about the komuz and the history behind each kyui.

To highlight Kyrgyz cultural heritage and inspire greater interest among youth, the E. Umetov Pedagogical Institute began the event with a recital from the Epic of Manas and hosted a komuz-themed quiz for students, creating a festive and engaging atmosphere.

Komuz Day was officially established in 2019 by a decree of the President of the Kyrgyz Republic. Since then, JASU has organized annual events to honor the day. This year’s program placed particular emphasis on an exhibition and the historical roots of kyuis, further reinforcing the importance of the komuz in Kyrgyz culture.
